Szechuan restaurant raising money for quake victims

The picture of a young child's body buried beneath the rubble that was a building before a massive earthquake rocked China on Monday covers part of a wall of Abilene's Szechuan restaurant in Abilene.

Next to it are other photos showing the massive destruction of homes, buildings and life, all put up in the restaurant shortly after lunchtime on Tuesday.

At a counter near the entrance, a large plastic jar has been set out. Restaurant owners Byron and Cici Huang hope to see it filled with cash, money they will send to the Chinese province of Sichuan, the epicenter of the earthquake and the area hardest hit.
Szechuan was named for the Chinese province, an area known for is rich, spicy food.
Byron Huang said he and his wife feel a certain loyalty to the area and want to help the only way they can from thousands of miles away.

The earthquake came just days before the Huangs had decided to hold a grand opening ceremony for the restaurant, which reopened in January after relocating to a new building. On Wednesday, the reopening of the restaurant was formally celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, the only pall on an otherwise jubilant moment was the thought of thousands of earthquake victims.

"It breaks my heart to hear this sad news," he said. "We use (the Sichuan) name to represent our cuisine, and now I heard that 20,000 people might be dead."

Although neither he nor his wife hail from the Sichuan province, his wife still has friends there.

General manager Cesar Rangel said the grand opening was a way for the staff to celebrate a successful four months of business with its loyal customers.

Huang and Rangel said money collected will be given to the American Red Cross for relief efforts in China.
