Valley's award-winning Chinese restaurants welcome the Year of the Ox

"Wherever you live, the best way to celebrate Chinese New Years is to book a table at your favortie Chinese restaurant on the ones we've awarded with family and friends," said Betty Xie, Editor in Chief, Chinese Restaurant News. "The Year of the Ox officially starts on Monday, January 26. May you be prosperous in 2009!"

Although none of the Valley's Chinese restaurants broke into the Top Ten restaurants listed by Chinese Restaurant News, two were numbered among the top 100 Overall Excellence Winners and others were recognized for individual awards. The Top 10 Overall Excellence winners were announced at the 5th Annual Top 100 Chinese Restaurants in the USA Awards Show in Las Vegas, NV on January 5, 2009. The Chinese Restaurant News was founded in 1995 to inform Chinese-speaking owners and operators for over 43,000 Chinese restaurants in the U.S.

New Wok at 11345 W. Buckeye Rd. in Avondale and Dragon Wok at 727 W. Ray Rd. in Gilbert were both honored among the Top 100 Overall Excellence Winners. The Dragon Wok is also among the Top 100 for Best Décor, while the New Wok is among the Top 100 Local Favorites. The Golden Egg Roll at 3320 S. Priest Dr. in Tempe was named one of the Top 100 Take-Outs. Tao Garden at 2050 N. Alma School Rd, Ste 36, in Chandler has one of the Top 100 Healthy Menus. Phoenix fairs better when it comes to Chinese/Asian Fusion with both Hong Kong Express (668 N.44th St.) and New Super China Buffet (601 W. Bell Rd.) both making the top 100 list. The Flamingo Palace at 350 E.Van Buren St. also puts Phoenix on the Top 100 List for Regional Chinese Restaurants. Yao at 2487 S. Gilbert Rd in Gilbert boasts one of the Top 100 Signature Dishes.

Interestingly, only Hong Kong Express, named one of the Chinese/Asian Fusion Top 100, calls the COFCO Chinese Cultural Center home. For those who have not visited the Chinese Cultural Center, it was developed as an up-scale cultural destination complete with shopping, dining, gardens, art and architecture. And it is a lovely respite from the usual Phoenix scene. The gardens, in particular, are worth a visit. Designed by renowned garden architect Madame Ye in accordance with Feng Shui and Ying Yang principles they are a remarkable example of the skill and craftsmanship Chinese gardeners and artisans have been recognized for over five millenia. Asian visitors and ewcomers to Phoenix will be interested to learn the center is also home to the Asian Bank of Arizona which serves the estimated 200,000 Asian residents in the Valley, especially small and mid-sized businesses, often in their native anguage. Those preferring to cook their own holiday meal will find many of the necessary ingredients at Super LRanch Market, which specializes in imported Asian foods, fresh produce and seafood. COFCO will celebrate the NewYear Holiday Festival on February 6, 7 and 8, 2009.
